A playful, often ironic breviary, which begins with early Christian cosmology and follows the biblical mutations of the angel from Babylon to the present day, sketching in as it goes a history which ranges from ancient Greek legends of the origin of light to the medieval darkness of the eclipse. But the letters here are also addressed to an unnamed 'other' and chart the course of an elusive affair. It is a declaration of love but also a far-reaching essay which moves between etymological history, anthropological anecdote, philosopy and disquition on the nature of art: 'An angel is nothing but the personified meaning of the questions we ask.' It includes 33 sumptous illustrations by Arnold Mario Dall'O that chart the stories of the saints. A unique dialogue between literature and art: an extraordinary and rare book about love.
