Since the mid-nineties, performance artist and writer Guillermo Gómez-Peña has engaged in a series of ongoing conversations with cultural luminaries including theorists, curators, activists and fellow artists. These bold, agile and at times humorous texts tackle the overlapping terrain between art and theory, calling for a more horizontal relationship between the two. The texts, gathered together for the first time, represent the most challenging and captivating of these conversations, and reflect Gómez-Peña’s significant contribution to key debates within the international art world. Not only do these conversations address a number of complex and timely issues—from border culture to new technologies to urban hipsterism to globalization-gonewrong— but they serve as powerful models for political and artistic engagement.

Conversations Across Borders explores dialogue as a performative act, as a radical space for initiating and testing the boundaries of critical culture.

Guillermo Gómez-Peña was born in Mexico City and moved to the US in 1978, where he established himself as a performance artist, writer, activist and educator. He has pioneered multiple media, including performance art, experimental radio, video, performance photography and installation art. Most of his artistic and intellectual work concerns the interface between North and South (Mexico and the US), border culture and the politics of the brown body.
