A season-long diary by artist Somnath Hore capturing his thoughts on the work of Rodin and the hope of rain, the mangoes that ripen in the garden and the medical crisis that looms over the household, the friends that came to tea and the insecure future of independent India. Effortlessly flitting between topics great and small, he sculpts each thought into text with humour, honesty and humaneness, revealing in the process the incredibly gifted and sensitive mind that contributed to the making of one of the major painter–sculptors of our time. This volume contains the English translation of the diary accompanied by the artist’s sketches as well as reproductions of the original Bengali text. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Somnath Hore (b. 1921, in Baroma Chittagong district) taught at Indian Art College and Delhi Polytechnic before coming to teach at Kala Bhavan, Shantiniketan. Also visiting Lecturer at M. S. University of Baroda for a short time, Hore worked in various media—print-making, drawing and water colour—before turning to sculpture in his later years. Author of Tebhagar Diary and Amar Chitro Bhabona, Hore received the Padma Bhushan (posthumously), he Aban–Gagan Puroshkar, the Lalit Kala ratna and Rabindra Bharati University Award among many others. Hore lived and worked in Santiniketan until his death in October 2006. He is survived by his wife Reba and daughter Chandana. Sunandini Banerjee is an editor, graphic designer and translator who lives and works in Calcutta.
