This book consists of articles and essays that are described by the author as an attempt at ‘academic journalism’—a term used to suggest the writing of articles of cogent theoretical value for non-academic journals. The collected articles in this book analyse and illustrate the complexity of politics and its dynamics, in a global setting, involving various countries, themes and historical contexts often reflecting the dichotomy between various meanings of political ideologies and their practice. From Dr Chakravorti’s perspective it can be argued that ‘a political problem is not solved, it may only be settled.’ The issues discussed in Terrorism and Other Themes: Politics, Principles and Practice, can be seen as case studies that illustrate this viewpoint.
Dr Robi Chakravorti has had a distinguished career as a journalist in India and a Professor of Sociology in an American University. He was an Assistant Editor with the Amrita Bazar Patrika in 1965 before he left India for good and began living in the US as an academic Sociologist. He has continued to keep his journalistic self active by writing regularly for Indian papers and magazines, in particular the Economic and Political Weekly and Frontier in the days it was edited by the late journalist Samar Sen.
